Enjoy the Behind-the-Scenes Experiences at the Virginia Zoo

For a fun-filled way to learn about wildlife and conservation, enjoy the behind-the-scenes tours at the Virginia Zoo. The proceeds benefit the zoo's animal care internship program, and every tour is "filled with memorable experiences and fascinating information. Here are a few of the adventures you can enjoy near our Town Center apartments:

Malayan Tapir

Go behind the scenes to learn all about the largest tapir species. Malayan tapirs are black-and-white animals with three toes on their hind legs. In the wild, these creatures are typically nocturnal and prefer to live alone. At the zoo, you'll meet Rosco, Haddie, or Luther. You may watch a training or enrichment session, and the keepers will share about their conservation status and what it takes to care for them.

Masai Giraffe

Get up close to the zoo's tallest residents. Male Masai giraffes reach a height of up to 19.5 feet, while females reach 16 to 18 feet. These majestic animals spend between 16 and 20 hours a day eating and searching for food. They consume around 75 pounds daily and prefer the leaves of acacia trees. During the behind-the-scenes experience, you'll have a chance to feed Kylie, Billy, Imara, and their friends.

Two-Toed Sloth

Two-toed sloths are among the slowest moving animals on Earth. These creatures have brownish-gray hair. They weigh between nine and eighteen pounds and feast on fruit, leaves, and small twigs. During the tour, you'll enjoy a private encounter with one of the zoo's sloths. The keepers also share fascinating facts and offer the tours daily at 9:30 a.m.
